When the air turns cool and dry, a warm herbal steam can bring a little comfort to the day. Sinus steams are an easy at-home practice - all you need are a few simple herbs and a bowl of hot water.
We like to use herbs for their naturally aromatic qualities. Together, they create a warm, grounding experience that helps open your senses and bring a bit of calm when the season feels heavy.
This ritual is simple, soothing, and can easily become part of your fall or winter routine. Make a cup of tea, grab a towel, and take a few minutes just for yourself to breathe deeply and unwind.
Prepping Time: 10 mins. Can be enjoyed multiple times a day as needed*. Most enjoyed by adults, but formulated for kids 1 and up with guidance near hot water
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 1 large heatproof bowl
- A large, clean towel
- A handful of fresh thyme, or 2 tablespoons of dried thyme
- Boiling water
- Optional: eucalyptus essential oil
DIRECTIONS:
- Boil 4 to 5 cups of water in a pot or kettle. Place the thyme in a large, heatproof bowl.
- Optional: for a more aromatic steam, add 4-6 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the water. Carefully pour the boiling water over the herbs.
- Wait a few minutes to let the water cool slightly so the steam is not too hot for your face.
- Position yourself comfortably over the bowl and drape a towel over your head and the bowl to create a tent.
- With your eyes closed, breathe deeply through your nose and mouth for 5 to 10 minutes. The steam can be intense. Lift a corner of the towel to let in cool air if it gets too hot.
