What does USDA Certified Organic Mean?

You may have noticed the USDA Certified Organic seal on a lot of different products—from your eggs at breakfast, to your chicken breast at dinner, and even on the Nipple Cream you use in between! But what does the USDA Certified Organic seal actually mean?

In order to be certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), a product needs to meet these specific standards:

  • Organic crops cannot be grown with synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or sewage sludge.
  • Organic crops cannot be genetically engineered—this means all USDA Certified Organic products are non-GMO.
  • Animals must eat only organically grown feed and can’t be treated with synthetic hormones or antibiotics.
  • Animals must have access to the outdoors, and ruminants, such as cows, must have access to pasture.
  • Animals cannot be cloned.

WHY DO WE CHOOSE ORGANIC?

We at Motherlove have always felt that at no time is it more important to be using organic, safe, and minimally processed products than during pregnancy and nursing. That is why we only use USDA Certified Organic or wild-crafted herbs. While herbs are an important part of our products, they aren’t the only ingredients. In addition to the herbs, we always strive to source our other ingredients as USDA Certified Organic, such as the beeswax and shea butter that make our Pregnant Belly Salve and Nipple Cream so smooth, and the grain alcohol that helps extract the herbs in our liquid tinctures. That is how so many of our products carry the USDA Certified Organic seal on the product itself, not just on the ingredients.

Motherlove takes our commitment to organic one step further by operating a certified organic herb farm in northern Colorado. To learn more about our farm, and our passion for organics, check out our new video series.
