Fenugreek, especially if taken in larger-than-recommended doses, can cause gastric upset or gassiness in the mother, and less likely, in the baby. In More Milk Plus, Motherlove blends fenugreek with fennel, a digestive aid, to help counteract this possible side effect. Also, fenugreek is not recommended for those with hypothyroidism who are on medication, as it may block the absorption of the thyroid medication. In rare cases, fenugreek can also lower blood sugar and cause breakthrough menstrual bleeding.

I have newborn twins and am exclusively breastfeeding. I had bought this in case I had any issues with my supply and decided to try taking it to see if it would actually boost my supply. As soon as I started taking it, my milk almost dried up. My babies were hungry, I couldn’t get more than half an ounce while pumping and my breasts felt empty. This tincture was the only thing that I had done differently. 24 hours after I stopped taking it, my milk supply was back to normal.
Be careful. I didn’t know fenugreek has the opposite effect on some people and wish I would have known. Thankfully it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I’m just glad I realized this was the culprit before I had to resort to using formula.
