Why No Lanolin in Motherlove's Nipple Cream?

Why No Lanolin in Motherlove's Nipple Cream?

When we talk about our best-selling Nipple Cream, we often say it’s ‘lanolin free’. This frequently raises the question, “why?”. Lanolin is in some widely available and well-known creams, so why did we choose to omit this common ingredient?

WHAT IS LANOLIN?

Lanolin is a natural wax coating on sheep wool that is removed by boiling the wool and collecting the wax. Sheep are often treated with a pesticide dip which contains chemicals such as DDT, lindane, and diazinon to control parasites. Because we are dedicated to avoiding the use of toxins in products that are made for parents and their babies, this is one reason we have chosen not use this ingredient.

CAN YOU HAVE A SENSITIVITY TO LANOLIN?

If you have a sensitivity to wool, lanolin may not be the best option for your sore nipples. It can cause further pain and be quite unpleasant, often leaving a tingling or itchy feeling. In fact, many mothers who live in warmer climates might not be aware that they have a sensitivity. This is likely because they are not reaching for a wool sweater anytime soon! When your nipples are already sore, we want to prevent the risk of making it even more unpleasant, so this is another reason we left out lanolin.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND OUR NIPPLE CREAM SAMPLES?

In hospitals, you will often see a lanolin cream as the available sample for nipple care. However, as we continue to grow, our samples are now in thousands of facilities, allowing for mothers to have an organic and lanolin free option for their journey. We believe that mothers should find what works best for them, so we are proud to be the safe and effective alternative in hospitals and practices.

WHAT IS IN OUR NIPPLE CREAM?

We infuse calendula flowers and marshmallow root in extra virgin olive oil and add in shea butter and beeswax to create more of an emollient feel. Our Nipple Cream rubs on smoothly, does not need to be washed off prior to nursing, and doesn't leave a sticky feeling. Plus - it is 100% USDA Certified Organic.
